Tybee Island completes new sewer system for Fort Screven and north end

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) -Tybee Island has completed a new sewer system for the Fort Screven and north end areas after years of planning and construction.
To celebrate, the city hosted a “toilet paper cutting” on Wednesday.
The $2.2 million sewage project is the first in a 10-year capital plan approved by the city council two years ago. The plan is designed to upgrade aging water and sewer systems across the island.
The city says the infrastructure improvements will require modest annual water and sewer rate increases.
“For years we’ve struggled with aging pipes in this area, backups, a system that was frankly going under homes, pools, and down the drain,” Mayor Brian West said. “Today, we flush these concerns away. I’d like to thank our engineers, contractors, and public works crews. When it comes to infrastructure, this project is truly the number one solution to a number two problem.”
The new system provides greater capacity and improved reliability.
