Thousands expected in Savannah for major HBCU Battle of the Bands showcase

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Nine Historically Black Colleges and Universities are gearing up to take over Theodore A. Wright Stadium next month for a major celebration of music, culture, and educational opportunity.

The 2026 Big HBCU Battle of the Bands: Battle for the South is officially scheduled to bring its signature high-energy showcase to Savannah on Sunday, September 13. Approximately 15,000 fans are anticipated to attend.

Organizers say the event is designed to highlight the profound impact of HBCUs while introducing local middle and high school students to higher-education pathways and collegiate marching band culture.

The main event begins at 4:00 p.m. at Theodore A. Wright Stadium, featuring powerful drumlines, precision marching, and dynamic dance routines from the following nine participating schools:

  • South Carolina State University
  • Virginia State University
  • Savannah State University
  • Talladega College
  • Fort Valley State University
  • Bethune-Cookman University
  • Albany State University
  • Winston-Salem State University
  • Benedict College

Fan Fest details

Before the main event, families, students, and community members can enjoy the official Fan Fest from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. held right outside the stadium. The pre-show festivities will feature food trucks, local vendors, live music, and family-friendly activities.

In addition to entertainment, recruiters and college representatives from the participating institutions will be on-site to connect with local youth.
