Teen sentenced to life in prison without parole for death of Devin Smith three years ago

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Chatham County judge sentenced 19-year-old Ashton Kohl Johnson to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus an additional 15 years for the murder of Devin Smith.

Smith was shot and killed during a robbery in broad daylight at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Duffy Lane in July of 2023.

A jury convicted Johnson in February after a multi-day trial for the robbery and murder.

Co-defendant Rober-Iquis Maxwell, 25, is already serving life without parole for his role in the crime.

Johnson has filed a motion for a new trial.

Now facing trial are 25-year-old Roberiquis Maxwell and 19-year-old Ashton Kohl Johnson.
