St. Joseph’s/Candler in Savannah and Pooler provides free hernia screenings to help detect hernias

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - St. Joseph’s/Candler is offering free hernia screenings at two locations later this month to help residents identify potential health concerns and learn about treatment options.
The screenings will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, at Candler Hospital’s Marsh Auditorium and the St. Joseph’s/Candler Pooler Campus Lobby.
Screenings will be conducted by Master Hernia Surgeons and are available at no cost to participants.
In addition to the screenings, attendees will have the opportunity to see demonstrations of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, which is commonly used for hernia procedures and other minimally invasive surgeries.
According to St. Joseph’s/Candler, research shows one in four people will experience a hernia during their lifetime. Hernias can cause pain, discomfort and impact quality of life if left untreated.
Common signs of a hernia include a visible lump or bulge in the groin, abdomen or scrotum area, along with pain that worsens when coughing, lifting, straining or exercising.
Health experts say hernias can affect both men and women and may sometimes go undetected for years.
Appointments for the free screenings can be scheduled by calling 912-819-2778 or by registering online through St. Joseph’s/Candler.
