SLED investigates Hampton County finances

by Summer Swanson

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has opened an investigation into Hampton County finances at the request of the county.

SLED was requested by Hampton County on May 20, 2026 to investigate the sales, transfers, dispositions, and title records of Hampton County owned vehicles, misuse of county gas cards and related financial handling from January 1, 2023, to the present.

SLED opened the investigation on May 28, 2026.

SLED said their investigation is active and ongoing.

The county released the following statement regarding the investigation:

Hampton County remains committed to transparency and accountability across all financial practices. In keeping with that commitment, the County formally requested the involvement of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in an investigation of all car sales by Hampton County. As the County continues strengthening its accounting practices, the request for SLED’s involvement is a natural extension of that ongoing process. The County will keep the public informed as this process moves forward.
