Skidaway Island church volunteers teaming up with nonprofit to build 50 beds for local kids

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Dozens of Savannah-area children will soon have their own beds to sleep in thanks to a collaborative volunteer effort planned this weekend on Skidaway Island.
Members of Messiah Lutheran Church are joining forces with the charity Sleep in Heavenly Peace on Saturday, Oct. 3, with the goal of constructing 50 wooden bed frames for local youth who currently lack adequate sleeping arrangements.
The workday runs from 8 a.m. to noon on the church grounds at 1 W. Ridge Road.
Organizers are welcoming anyone who wants to help, noting that volunteers do not need any background in woodworking or tool handling. Leaders from Sleep in Heavenly Peace will guide participants through each station, providing all materials, protective gear, and equipment on site. The project is scheduled to proceed rain or shine, and organizers will serve a morning breakfast for helpers starting at 8 a.m.
The national organization focuses on combating child bedlessness by rallying local neighborhoods to craft, sand, assemble, and deliver brand-new beds directly to area families.
Church leaders said the project serves as an extension of their ongoing youth ministry, giving neighbors a direct way to support vulnerable households.
Anyone interested in volunteering or supporting the effort can reach coordinator Lisa Oswald by phone at (203) 554-5845 or through email at laoswald@icloud.com.
