SC prosecutors want Alex Murdaugh’s sealed trial records made public. Here’s what’s inside.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - State prosecutors are now asking to have previously sealed records from Alex Murdaugh’s first murder trial to be made public.

The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office filed a motion on Monday to unseal the in-camera portion of the original trial transcript and other investigative material from the 2023 trial.

Murdaugh was initially convicted of killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul - a decision was overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court earlier this year.

In its request, prosecutors note that its asking for the records to be unsealed “with appropriate privacy redactions” and “related investigative materials” that led to one juror, Myra Crosby, being dismissed.

Crosby went on to become known as the “egg juror” or the “egg lady” after it was found she left her belongings in the jury room, which included a dozen eggs brought to her by another juror.

Through her attorney, Crosby filed to have records from the jury-tampering investigation released earlier this year.

The state also responded to Murdaugh’s motion to modify a protective order while asking the court to unseal documents and video interviews from the investigation into former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill, who was accused of jury tampering.

Prosecutors also asked for those records to come with similar redactions.

Hill ultimately pleaded guilty to charges linked to misconduct and perjury, but was not charged with jury tampering in the first Murdaugh trial. Murdaugh has since sued Hill in federal court, claiming her actions led to his conviction.

Prosecutors said the request comes due to large public interest in the case, but acknowledged that written records will be easier to redact than video footage.

The state also said that it’s preparing for “already complex and high profile” case and wants enough time to complete redactions.
