Savannah wins global grant to fund youth climate ideas

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah has been selected as one of 300 cities worldwide to receive funding through Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund, bringing $50,000 to support environmental projects designed and led by local young people.

The grant will help the City of Savannah’s Office of Sustainability engage residents ages 15 to 24 in developing solutions that address local environmental priorities. Selected youth-led projects will receive funding and technical assistance to bring their ideas to life.

City officials say the initiative is designed to empower young residents to take the lead on projects that improve public spaces, strengthen infrastructure, increase disaster resilience and address other climate-related challenges.

“This grant represents an investment not only in Savannah’s environmental future but also the next generation of leaders who will help shape it,” Mayor Van Johnson said in a statement. “Young people bring creativity, energy and fresh perspectives to some of the most pressing challenges facing our community.”

Savannah joins 300 municipalities across the globe participating in the program, which builds on previous efforts spanning 34 countries where cities partnered with young people to create community-driven environmental improvements.

City Manager Jay Melder said the funding will help the city work directly with young residents to identify local challenges, develop solutions and create measurable environmental benefits.

The Office of Sustainability plans to launch an online application process later this year for youth-led and youth-serving organizations interested in receiving grant funding.

Savannah residents between the ages of 15 and 24 can learn more about the program and upcoming opportunities by visiting here.
