Savannah State alumna leaves $346,000 to support students

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah State University has announced a $346,000 estate gift from alumna Gwen-Dolyn Cutter to support student-athletes and students pursuing careers in public service.
The gift allocates $173,000 each to the university’s athletics program and the John Lewis School of Public Policy and Social Sciences.
Cutter, a 1968 graduate and longtime university supporter, died Feb. 26, 2025.
“Ms. Cutter’s legacy reflects the enduring bond between Savannah State University and its alumni,” university President Jermaine Whirl said.
Whirl said the gift will help students develop their talents, pursue their education and prepare to serve their communities.
A Screven County native, Cutter served as editor of the Tiger Yearbook and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority during her time at Savannah State.
After graduating, she worked for the state of Georgia until retirement. She remained involved with the university through the Savannah State University National Alumni Association and the President’s Club.
The athletics funding will support student-athletes and university athletic programs. The public policy school’s allocation will expand educational opportunities for students preparing for careers in public service, policy, government and community engagement.
Adrian Scott, vice president of university advancement, said Cutter’s planned gift will provide opportunities for generations of students.
The university honored Cutter’s service and generosity and expressed appreciation to her family and loved ones.
