Savannah residents can save 25% on flood insurance through FEMA program

by Stephanie Adkisson

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -The city of Savannah is working with FEMA’s Community Rating System to provide residents a 25% discount on flood insurance policies.

The city published a new website Tuesday with information on how to save on flood insurance and how to protect residents, families and property in the event of a disaster.

City earns Class 5 rating

Savannah earned a Class 5 rating through the Community Rating System, which awards cities that provide residents with additional information on flooding with monetary discounts on insurance policies. Only 17% of communities nationwide have achieved that rating or better, and Savannah is one of eight communities in Georgia to reach a Class 5.

“Because our score is high in the FEMA run community rating system, we can help keep your neighborhood safer and that ability translates into monetary savings for households across the city,” Mayor Van Johnson said.

More than $846,000 saved in 2025

The program resulted in more than $846,000 in savings to Savannah residents in 2025 alone, according to Mayor Johnson.

City Engineer and Senior Director of Development Services Julie McLean said community education is central to the program’s mission.

“It’s a big part of our CRS program is education and outreach to try to help people any way that we can,” McLean said.

Mayor Johnson said he personally carries flood insurance despite no longer living in a flood zone.

“I don’t live in a flood zone anymore, but I have flood insurance because we think about when it rains, rain coming down is one thing. Floodwaters rising up is something different,” Johnson said.
