Savannah Police say 27 rounds fired in weekend shooting, gang connection not established

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah Police say at least 27 rounds were fired during a shooting near West Bay Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard last weekend as investigators continue working to determine who was responsible and whether the incident was connected to gang activity.
The shooting happened around 11:27 p.m. Sept. 26 in the 500 block of W. Bay St. near MLK Jr. Boulevard. Multiple rounds were fired, and police said ballistic damage was found on several vehicles.
Video obtained by WTOC showed people running from the area as gunfire erupted. Three unoccupied vehicles were struck, and no injuries were reported.
According to the Savannah Police Department, the ShotSpotter system detected at least 27 rounds fired during the incident.
Police said investigators are following credible leads, interviewing people of interest and examining evidence. No arrests have been made.
No gang connection established
The shooting prompted Chatham County Sheriff Richard Coleman to call the incident gang activity and call for increased efforts to address gangs in Savannah.

At this time, Savannah Police say there is no established gang connection to the shooting.
SPD said investigators are still working to determine whether a “gang nexus” exists, which the department defines as a documented connection between an incident, person, location, motive or evidence and gang activity.
Police emphasized that the incident has not been determined to involve substantiated gang activity.
If investigators determine there is a gang-related connection, SPD said it can utilize its established gang unit, which the department said has been used for nearly a decade to investigate gang-related crimes.
The investigation remains ongoing.
