Savannah opens cooling centers ahead of Saturday heat advisory

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah is opening cooling facilities due to a heat advisory in effect for Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026.

What to know

The heat advisory is in effect Saturday, Sept. 5, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The city says heat index values up to 110 degrees are expected. The coastal South Carolina/Georgia corridor is an impacted area. Elevated temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses.

What to do

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding energy drinks and alcohol, refraining from direct exposure to the sun and tending to relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

OSHA recommends taking extra precautions for those who work or spend time outside, including wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and, when possible, rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Those overcome by heat should move to a cool and shaded location, as heat stroke and heat exhaustion are emergencies. OSHA recommends knowing the signs, symptoms and when to call 911.

• Cloverdale Neighborhood Center - 1919 Cynthia St.
• Crusader Neighborhood Center - 81 Coffee Bluff Villa Rd.
• Eastside Regional Center - 415 Goebel Ave.
• Hudson Hill Center - 2227 Hudson St.
• John S. Delaware Regional Center - 1815 Lincoln St.
• Liberty City Neighborhood Center - 1401 Mills B. Lane Blvd.
• Mary Flournoy Golden Age Center - 1001 W. 39th St.
• Tatemville Neighborhood Center - 333 Coleman St.
• Tompkins Regional Center - 2333 Ogeechee Rd.
• Tremont Neighborhood Center - 2010 Paige Ave.
• Windsor Forest Regional Center - 414 Briarcliff Cir.
• W.W. Law Regional Center - 900 E. Bolton St.

Splash pads will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations:

• Victory Heights Park – E. 41st St.
• Avondale Park – 2117 Alabama Ave.
• Ben Van Clark Park – 1202 E Park Ave.
• Forsyth Park - 1 W. Gaston St.
• Hudson Hill Community Center – 202 W. Lathrop Ave.
• Tatemville Community Center – 333 Coleman St.
• Hull Park – 55th Atlantic Ave.
• Forest Hills Park – 4901 Skidaway Rd.
• Crusader Community Center – 81 Coffee Bluff Villa Rd.

Pools will be free and open to the public from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the following locations:

• Daffin – 1301 E. Victory Dr.
• Tompkins Center – 2333 Ogeechee Rd.
• WW Law – 900 E. Bolton St.

Partner facilities include the Union Mission Resource Center at 702 Oglethorpe Ave., open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and The Salvation Army at 3100 Montgomery St., open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Homeless Authority transport is available from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 912-803-2994.

The City of Savannah will continue to assess the need for cooling resources and issue updates as they become necessary and available.
