Savannah opens cooling center, splash pads and pools as dangerous heat moves in

by Shakuria Smith

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah is opening cooling facilities this weekend as dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity are expected to blanket the Coastal Empire.

The National Weather Service is forecasting heat advisories for Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and potentially reaching triple digits by Sunday. Heat index values could range from 105 to 110 degrees, especially along the coast.

City officials warn that the combination of extreme heat and humidity could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, despite the possibility of scattered thunderstorms.

To help residents stay safe, the city will open the Tompkins Community Center, located at 2333 Ogeechee Road, as a cooling center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Several splash pads will also be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., including locations at:

  • Victory Heights Park
  • Avondale Park
  • Ben Van Clark Park
  • Hudson Hill Community Center
  • Tompkins Community Center
  • Tatemville Community Center
  • Hull Park
  • Forest Hills Park
  • Crossroads
  • Crusader Community Center
  • Forsyth Park

City pools will offer free admission from 1 to 6 p.m. this weekend at:

  • Daffin Pool (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Jenkins Pool (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Tompkins Pool (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Bowles Ford Pool (Saturday only)
  • W.W. Law Pool (Saturday only)

Officials encourage residents to drink plenty of water, avoid prolonged sun exposure and check on neighbors, especially older adults and those without air conditioning.

The city also reminds parents and caregivers never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.

Anyone spending time outdoors should wear lightweight clothing, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning and watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Anyone showing symptoms should be moved to a cool place and 911 should be called immediately.

The City of Savannah says it will continue monitoring weather conditions and provide updates as needed.
