Savannah marks 1779 Battle of Savannah with annual memorial march

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Coastal Heritage Society held its annual Battlefield Memorial March on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, honoring the soldiers who fought in the 1779 Battle of Savannah, one of the Revolutionary War’s most significant conflicts.
March route and ceremony
Participants retraced the footsteps of soldiers who marched toward the battlefield, traveling down West Boundary Street and along Louisville Road.
Following the march, participants gathered at Battlefield Memorial Park for a remembrance ceremony and memorial stone dedication honoring those who lost their lives in the battle.
Organizer reflects on event
“Coastal Heritage Society has been telling the revolutionary story in Savannah for decades. We’re so proud to be able to share this event with the community year after year. We had an incredible turnout with the awful weather outside, but we are excited to remember the soldiers of the past and to think about them as we step forward into today,” said Nora Fleming Lee, Coastal Heritage Society CEO.
“It is our privilege each year to remember the sacrifice these soldiers made,” Fleming Lee said. “As we commemorate America 250, Battlefield Memorial March offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Savannah’s enduring role in our nation’s founding and to honor those who fought for its future.”
Organizers say the march is part of the America 250 commemoration.
