SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - More than 400 elected officials, public administrators and advocates filled Plant Riverside on Friday night to celebrate public service and honor Savannah Mayor Van Johnson.

The 2026 National Forum for Black Public Administrators Leadership Awards Gala, themed “When Leadership Matters Most,” was held at the JW Marriott Savannah. WTOC’s Dawn Baker served as emcee.

The national organization is dedicated to advancing leadership in public service through professional development, networking and advocacy. Organizers said the gala supports NFBPA’s year-round mentorship and leadership programs for current and future public administrators.

Krishon Seastrunk, president of the NFBPA Savannah Metro Chapter, said the evening was about recognition and inspiration for the next generation of leaders.

“Honoring people like this tonight for this leadership gala, it lets us know that, hey — that can be me one day and be honored too for leadership, for the legacy, for the impact I have on others,” Seastrunk said.

Johnson, mayor of Savannah since 2020, received a surprise Spirit and Legacy of Leadership Award during the program. Organizers did not announce the honor in advance.

The Savannah Metro Chapter hosted this year’s national gathering, bringing national leaders to the Coastal Empire for a night focused on service, legacy and impact.
