Red Cross of Georgia prepares to help communities affected by Hurricane Isaias

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — The Red Cross of Georgia says its teams are mobilized to help communities prepare for Hurricane Isaias and provide response and recovery support afterward.
Isaias is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds, raising concerns about flooding and storm damage. The organization has identified potential shelter locations and readied disaster volunteers, relief supplies and emergency vehicles.
FULL FORECAST: Isaias now a major hurricane; Showers to start in north Georgia tonight
“If someone experiences flooding, we may help them with a clean-up kit and other community resources that are available to them to get back on their feet through the recovery process,” Flexner said. “If someone loses eyeglasses, we can help them replace those, or prescription medications.”
City of Atlanta crews are also clearing storm drains to help limit flooding. Officials urge people to take the storm seriously because conditions can worsen quickly.
In May, a woman stranded on top of her car was rescued during flash flooding on the Downtown Connector.
Before the storm, people should secure outdoor items, check emergency kits, avoid driving through floodwaters and use flashlights instead of candles if the power goes out.
People affected by the storm can call 1-800-RED-CROSS, visit redcross.org or download the Red Cross Emergency app for shelter information and safety tips.
