Pooler teens get a seat at the table with new Youth Council

by Shakuria Smith

POOLER, Ga. (WTOC) - The first members of the Pooler Youth Council will be inducted during the city’s upcoming City Council meeting, giving local high school students an opportunity to help shape their community’s future.

Mayor Karen Williams says the council will help young people get involved in local government, develop leadership skills and have a voice in the community.

The annual program runs from September through May. Members will share ideas with city leaders, participate in community initiatives and attend monthly Youth Council and Pooler City Council meetings.

The program also includes special events and an overnight trip to the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta in February.

Applications are now closed. The program was open to Pooler residents in grades nine through 12 who demonstrated leadership potential, a commitment to community service and the ability to attend required meetings and events.

The City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m.

Residents can attend in person, watch a livestream on the city’s Facebook page or view the recording afterward.
