Plant Riverside hosts Juneteenth production honoring legacy of freedom

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A special production at Plant Riverside District in downtown Savannah turned Juneteenth into a live reminder that freedom was announced in a moment but carried through generations.

“The Day of Jubilee: Echoes of Freedom” took place Thursday evening to honor the Juneteenth holiday.

Organizers described the event as a theatrical musical journey through remembrance, resistance and rising.

Master storyteller Lillian Grant-Baptiste created the production and said she hopes audiences leave with a deeper appreciation for those who were enslaved and later freed.

“Those who actually beat the path that we now walk through to remember. To remember their sorrows, remember their joy, remember what they went through so we can be who we are,” Grant-Baptiste said.

Organizers said the production serves as a reminder that freedom is both a celebration and a legacy.

The performance also included spoken word and dance.
