BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — More than 40 dogs and puppies were rescued from an animal cruelty situation in the Lowcountry, according to Humane World for Animals.

The organization, formerly known as the Humane Society of the United States, said it assisted the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and Charleston Animal Society in rescuing the dogs after a search warrant was served around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Some of the dogs were found chained and had scarring on their faces and legs. Veterinarians said the injuries are consistent with organized dogfighting.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and Charleston Animal Society had not responded to requests for comment as of the time of this report.
