Officials: 9 injured after school bus collides with fuel tanker in Lee County

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (WIS) - Nine people were hurt after a crash involving a school bus and a fuel tanker in Lee County on Thursday.

The collision occurred on Thursday afternoon at 1340 Sumter Highway in front of the Pilot gas station. The South Carolina Highway Patrol said 33 students were on the bus, with nine being taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

WIS was at the scene on Thursday as the bus was being towed away, showing heavy damage to the front.

Lee County Sheriff Lee Simon told WIS the tanker truck was not loaded with fuel at the time of the crash.

In a statement on Friday, the Lee County School District confirmed the bus was carrying students from Lee Central Middle School. Officials also said seven students and two staff members were taken to a hospital as a precaution. Only minor injuries were reported.

The district added that the remaining students were safely taken to Lee Central High School, where they were reunited with their families.

“Our priority is always the safety and well-being of our students,” Lee County School District Superintendent Bernard McDaniel, Sr. said in a statement. “We are grateful that no serious injuries occurred and deeply appreciate the swift actions of first responders, school staff, and transportation personnel who ensured our students received immediate care and support.”

The district added that it is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues. It will also offer additional counseling and support for students who need them in the days ahead.
