New breast cancer support group brings connection, comfort and hope

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - St. Joseph’s/Candler’s Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion is launching a new support group for breast cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones.

A breast cancer diagnosis can bring major changes, unfamiliar medical terms, treatment decisions and insurance questions. The Breast Cancer Support Group is designed to help individuals and families navigate those challenges while connecting with others who have faced similar experiences.

The confidential meetings will be led by St. Joseph’s/Candler nurse navigators Michelle Beasley, MSN, and Rachel Sallach, BSN, OCN. Participants will receive support, education, encouragement and practical guidance throughout diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Sessions may include discussions about:

The emotional and physical effects of breast cancer
Treatment side effects and survivorship
Fear of cancer returning
Relationships, work and self-care
Wellness and stress-management strategies
Adjusting to life after treatment

Participants will also have opportunities to share their experiences, coping strategies and successes in a judgment-free environment.

Organizers say the group is not a substitute for medical or mental health treatment. Instead, it is intended to complement professional care by reducing isolation, strengthening support networks and helping participants build resilience.

The group will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month at Candler Hospital’s Marsh Auditorium, located on the first floor at 5353 Reynolds St. in Savannah. A light dinner will be provided.
