Mother found dead in Buckhead home possibly linked to NFL player, police say

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A woman possibly linked to an NFL player was found dead in a Buckhead home Tuesday afternoon, and a man has been detained in her death, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

Shortly after 12:36 p.m., officers responded to a welfare call placed by a family member at the Brownstones at Habersham, to a townhome complex off Roswell Road.

They found a deceased woman in her early 70s. Her identity has not been released.

Police said a man in his early 40s, who they believe to be the woman’s son, has been detained in connection to her death. Police said the woman died after a domestic incident with the man. Police also said it appears the man barricaded himself inside the home.

Police have not released the man’s identity or said whether he is facing charges. A police spokesperson called the man a person of interest. Detectives are interviewing him at police headquarters.

“We’ve made contact with family members, so we’re trying to determine the exact details of what transpired in the time frames. The neighbors have been helpful. We’ve been able to locate some valuable information to assist on a timeline,” said Lt. Christopher Butler with Atlanta Police.

The medical examiner will determine the woman’s cause of death.

Police said the victim is possibly linked to an NFL player, who is not the man officers detained. The NFL player may be the woman’s son and the brother of the man officers detained. Officers have not released the NFL player’s name.

Police said there have been previous calls to the home in April for possible arson and mental health episodes regarding the detained man.

“There have been some indications of possibly some mental health issues with an individual, but yeah, the family did indicate that,” Butler said.
