Mighty Eighth museum to explore wartime love story behind B-17 bombardier

POOLER, Ga. (WTOC) - A World War II love story told through letters between a B-17 bombardier and his bride will take center stage during an upcoming Mighty Talk at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force.

Author J. Ross Greene will present “A Fortress and a Legacy” at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at the museum, located at 175 Bourne Ave. in Pooler.

The book uses letters between B-17 bombardier Bud Perrin and his bride, a former Miss America contestant, to tell the story of a family separated by World War II. Greene wrote the book to preserve his uncle’s legacy and honor the daughter Perrin never knew.

The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Guests may also attend an optional lunch following the presentation. Lunch costs $10 with cash or $12 with a credit card for museum members. The cost for nonmembers is $15 with cash or $17 with a credit card.

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force preserves the stories of those who served in the Eighth Air Force during World War II. Museum attractions include a fully restored B-17 “Flying Fortress” and an immersive simulated bombing mission featuring actual combat footage.
