JASPER COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - The Jasper County Coroner’s Office is asking for the public’s help identifying human skeletal remains found in March 2026.

The remains were discovered March 7, 2026, in the Gilmania Area of Jasper County near Coosawhatchie and Point South. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office released them to the coroner’s office for identification.

Identification efforts

The coroner’s office asked for help from the Richland County Sheriff Department’s anthropologist and DNA department to identify the remains through dental records or a DNA match.

Officials have not been able to identify the remains. The anthropology department said they were only able to determine race, gender, and possible height.

Description of remains

The remains are believed to be those of an African American man between the ages of 25 and 35, standing between 5 feet 7 inches and 6 feet tall. The man is estimated to have been missing between one and five years.
