Is crime down in Savannah? Here are the SPD numbers
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -Savannah’s overall crime totals are far lower than they were a decade ago, but new police data show some categories trending upward so far this year compared to last year, including shoplifting and auto theft.
Savannah Police data show overall violent crime and property crime when combined (known as total Part 1) is nearly half compared to a decade ago. 10,470 reported crimes in 2016 and 5,274 in 2015.
The latest CompStat report, covering year-to-date totals through the week ending July 18, 2026, shows shoplifting up 35.8% compared with the same point last year, and auto theft up 32.1%.
Homicides are nearly the same year to date, with 17 so far this year compared with 18 at the same point in 2025.
Citywide numbers
All 2026 figures below are year to date through week ending July 18, 2026, compared with year to date through the same week in 2025.
- Total Part I: 2,903 vs 2,842, up 2.1%
- Total violent: 502 vs 582, down 13.7%
- Total property: 2,401 vs 2,260, up 6.2%
- Homicide: 17 vs 18, down 5.6%
- Shoplifting: 614 vs 452, up 35.8%
- Auto theft: 259 vs 196, up 32.1%
- Theft from vehicle: 468 vs 464, up 0.9%
- Theft from building: 192 vs 252, down 23.8%
- Other larceny: 151 vs 186, down 18.8%
