Hampton County law enforcement investigates fatal shooting in Nixville community

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left one person dead and two others injured on Two Sisters Ferry Road in the Nixville community at around 8:24 p.m. Sunday night.

Deputies responded to the location Sunday night after receiving a report of several individuals being shot. When they got there, deputies found three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene and two others were transported for medical treatment. The Hampton County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Josiah Demond Smart 19, of West Columbia.

Investigators said they believe this was an isolated incident.

Investigation into Hampton County shooting

Law enforcement said a suspicious individual was reported around two miles away on Rock Springs Road. When deputies made contact with the individual, he was identified as being at the scene at the time the incident occurred. Law enforcement said at this time, it does not appear that the individual was connected to the shooting itself.

“Our deputies and investigators are working diligently to gather all of the facts surrounding this incident,” Sheriff Russell said. “We ask the community to keep the family of the deceased lifted in prayer during this difficult time. Hampton County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation.”

This is an active and ongoing investigation. Law enforcement said no arrests have been made at this time.
