GSU tells students to shelter in place, Savannah PD investigates off-campus shooting near Largo Drive

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Tuesday, Georgia Southern University told students to shelter in place while the Savannah Police Department investigates an off-campus shooting at Largo Drive and Windsor Road.
Suspects at large
The university said there are two suspects that are not in custody at this time. One suspect is a man wearing a white tank top and the other is wearing a white t-shirt and khaki pants.
Georgia Southern officials said they were last seen in the area of the Joseph Landings Apartment Complex located at 12350 Mercy Blvd.
Direction of travel is unknown at this time.

One man seriously injured
Police said one man has serious injuries as a result of this shooting.
We spoke with the Savannah Police Department who told us the shooting happened at around 2:46 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Police also told us two groups were having an altercation before the individual was shot.
Alderman Kurtis Purtee gives statement
In a statement on social media, Alderman Kurtis Purtee identified the victim as a 19-year-old boy.
“Officers arrived on scene and discovered a 19-year-old male who was shot and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Officers are still on scene investigating, and the area has been closed. Please avoid the area if at all possible,” wrote Alderman Purtee.
School district responds
According to the Savannah-Chatham County School District, the incident happened during dismissal.
The district said only those there for afterschool activities were kept at the school during the lockdown. Officials said the lockdown was lifted by about 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Large police response
WTOC crews on the scene said there is police tape surrounding a nearby apartment complex.

Our crews also said the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol and Savannah-Chatham County Public School Board of Education Police are on the scene.
