Georgia trooper shoots kidnapping suspect after chase in Appling County

APPLING COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a Georgia State Patrol trooper shot a kidnapping suspect in Appling County Tuesday morning.

According to GSP, a trooper from Post 16 in Hazlehurst responded to assist the Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office with a pursuit involving a person wanted in connection with an active kidnapping case.

Authorities say the pursuit began in Jeff Davis County and continued into Appling County.

GSP says the driver eventually pulled over and ran from the vehicle. The trooper chased the suspect and repeatedly ordered him to stop, but authorities say the suspect did not comply.

During the foot chase, the suspect fell to the ground and allegedly reached toward his waistband while continuing to ignore the trooper’s commands, according the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

The trooper fired multiple times, hitting the suspect. The suspect was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been released.

The GBI was called to investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shooting investigations.
