Georgia Southern strengthens global research ties with Belize

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Georgia Southern University has signed a new partnership agreement with the University of Belize aimed at expanding research opportunities, academic collaboration and graduate education pathways for students and faculty at both institutions.

University leaders recently gathered in Belmopan, Belize, to formalize the partnership through a memorandum of understanding.

The agreement will give Georgia Southern students and faculty access to research opportunities in Belize, including studies focused on marine biology, tropical ecology and natural resource management. In turn, University of Belize faculty and students will gain expanded access to master’s and doctoral degree programs at Georgia Southern.

Officials say the partnership will also create opportunities for joint research projects focused on issues such as coastal resiliency, environmental sustainability and national development.

University of Belize faculty pursuing advanced degrees through Georgia Southern will be able to complete much of their coursework through a hybrid format, allowing them to continue teaching while conducting research.

Georgia Southern leaders say the collaboration strengthens the university’s global footprint while creating new opportunities for hands-on learning and international research experiences.

The partnership is already producing results, with two recent University of Belize graduates enrolling in doctoral programs within Georgia Southern’s College of Science and Mathematics.

Officials from both institutions say they expect the collaboration to lead to new research initiatives, academic exchanges and workforce development opportunities for years to come.
