Georgia Power targeted by hackers, company says

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Georgia Power says an unauthorized third party accessed limited information tied to about 300,000 of its customer accounts as part of a broader security incident affecting roughly 400,000 accounts.
The company said it recently detected suspicious activity involving its online customer portal. About 300,000 of the affected accounts belonged to Georgia Power customers, according to a company statement.
Georgia Power said it took immediate steps to stop the activity and notified law enforcement.
The company did not specify what customer information may have been accessed or when the suspicious activity occurred.
Georgia Power said it completed an investigation and found no evidence of continued unauthorized access to customer accounts.
The company said it is notifying affected customers and will provide free credit monitoring.
“We understand the trust our customers place in us and remain committed to protecting their information,” Georgia Power said in the statement.
