GDOT weekly traffic advisory: Expect lane closures, delays across Southeast Georgia

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Drivers across Southeast Georgia should prepare for potential travel delays over the coming week. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced its weekly schedule of construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects starting Saturday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 7, 2026.

All projects are subject to change based on weather and other factors. State officials caution motorists to reduce speeds, pay attention, and watch for crews when traveling through active work zones.

Key traffic interruptions and construction zones across local counties include:

Interstate 95

• Chatham & Effingham Counties: Expect lane closures on I-95 North from Knoxboro Creek Bridge to Savannah River Bridge (MP 111 - 112.5) Tuesday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for widening work.
• Chatham & Bryan Counties: Resurfacing work north of the Quacco Road overpass (MP 85 - 97) will cause nightly single-lane closures. Closures run Monday through Thursday (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.) and Friday through Sunday (7 p.m. to 6 a.m.).
• Bryan County: Nightly single-lane closures for bridge rehabilitation on I-95 North and South (MP 91 - 93) from Friday to Monday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• McIntosh County: Resurfacing projects will cause nightly double-lane closures (7 p.m. to 6 a.m.) and weekend double-lane closures from Exit 49 to Exit 58 and Altamaha River Bridge to Exit 49.
• Camden County: Bridge rehabilitation near MP 26-27 will cause nightly lane closures (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) and weekend double-lane closures from Friday night to Monday morning. Drivers should also watch for overnight Florida DOT lane closures pushing into Georgia near the state line.

Interstate 16

• Bryan County: Daily shoulder closures, lane shifts, and flagging on I-16 West (MP 142.5 - 143.5) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for exit ramp construction.
• Candler, Bulloch & Effingham Counties: Daily shoulder closures will occur Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for ongoing ITS equipment installation along the shoulders.

Interstate 516

• Chatham County: Continuous nightly and weekend lane closures will occur on I-516 East and West from Louisville Road to Tremont Road (MP 4 - 6) for bridge maintenance, marking, and striping from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Active Detours & Closures

• Liberty County: Lewis Frasier Road is closed at Peacock Creek for a 150-day bridge replacement project. Traffic is detoured via US-17 and US-84.
• Ware County: Swamp Road is closed from Gilmore Drive to Ed Tatum Road for a 180-day bridge replacement. Detours are marked via Ed Tatum Road, Lottie Tatum Road, and 8 Mile Post Road.
• Candler County: Portal Highway is closed for bridge replacement over Fifteen Mile Creek; off-site detours are active.
• Telfair County: Friendship Church Road is closed for bridge replacement over Alligator Creek. Detour via SR-117.

Key State Route Projects

• Chatham County (US-80/Ogeechee Rd): Utilities work and nightly flagging from Victory Drive to Tremont Road for bridge beam installation, widening, and paving. Nightly single-lane closures on SR-21 from Traveler’s Way to Coldbrook Station.
• Effingham County: Roundabout construction for the Effingham Parkway project will cause daily flagging and lane shifts on Goshen Road and Blue Jay Road.
• Bulloch County: Traffic shifts are in place on SR-73 from Randy Lowery Road to Clito Road for widening. Flagging operations for ditch digging on SR-80 (MM 25.4 - 25.5) are active daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Bryan County (SR-144/US-17): Nightly single-lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for intersection and signal reconfiguration.
• Glynn County (SR-25): Daily and nightly lane closures with flagging from Yacht Road to SR-99.
• Toombs County: New traffic shifts are in place for the US-1/SR-4 widening project. Additionally, US-1 is detoured onto the US-1 Bypass/Connector around Lyons with new all-way stop intersections active.
