by WIS News 10 Staff

CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - A former South Carolina magistrate court clerk is now facing charges after allegedly stealing money from a traffic fine.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said 30-year-old Jessica Darnell was arrested Tuesday and charged with violation of ethics, failure of clerk to pay over fines and misconduct in office.

SLED said Darnell, identified as a former magistrate clerk of court in Calhoun County, allegedly stole $150 in June 2026 that was part of a traffic fine paid for by an unidentified offender.

Warrants state that Darnell also “knowingly and willfully” refused to immediately give the money to the court.

SLED said it was asked to investigate by the Calhoun County Magistrate’s Office. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the investigation.

Darnell was booked at the Orangeburg County Detention Center after her arrest.
