CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Two elderly victims in Chatham County’s Islands area lost more than $100,000 combined after scammers convinced them their computers were infected with a virus, according to the Chatham County Police Department.

Police said the incidents happened within the past week. In both cases, the victims reported seeing a pop-up on their computer warning of a virus.

One victim sent scammers more than $80,000, while the other sent more than $28,000, according to the department.

Police are urging residents to avoid clicking pop-ups or links in unexpected texts and emails.

The department also warns against sending or transferring money when someone claims a bank account or personal information has been compromised. Instead, residents should contact their financial institution directly to verify the claim and get help resolving any issue.

  • Avoid clicking unexpected computer pop-ups.
  • Do not click links in unexpected texts or emails.
  • Do not transfer money based on claims that your account or personal information has been compromised.
