Dangerous heat continues in Beaufort County; cooling locations open
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Beaufort County officials are encouraging residents and visitors to take precautions as dangerously hot and humid conditions continue through the weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Beaufort County, with record-breaking temperatures possible and heat index values expected to reach up to 110 degrees.
Anyone who needs temporary relief from the heat can visit one of the county’s designated cooling locations during regular business hours.
County officials said the facilities are open during their normal operating hours and are intended to provide temporary relief from the heat. Overnight stays are not permitted.
Weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking and pets are prohibited inside the facilities. Service animals are permitted. Visitors must follow facility rules and staff instructions.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
People should also check on older adults, young children and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
Children, older adults and pets should never be left inside a parked vehicle, even for a short period.
