City of Savannah issues precautionary boil water advisory after water main break, Bee Road closed through weekend

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah has issued a Boil Water Advisory that is expected to expire Sunday, July 19th.

The advisory is a precautionary measure issued for residents located on Bee Road (north of 52nd Street), and more specifically, east of Bee Road inclusive of East 51st Street to Grenoble Street to East 50th Street, following the failure of a city water main under Bee Road.

The City of Savannah has issued a Boil Water Advisory for Savannah Water customers.

Officials say around 5 a.m. Saturday, a 6-inch water main believed to have begun leaking at a brace point, resulting in the formation of a sinkhole. Around 6 a.m., a motorist drove through the water-covered area, causing damage to a second, 8-inch water main.

Bee Road between 50th and 52nd Streets will remain closed through the weekend while crews complete repairs.

City officials say crews will be on site throughout the day Saturday completing watermain repairs. Once the repairs are complete, crews will conduct system flushing in the affected area and collect water samples for laboratory testing.

Water service for affected homes is expected to be restored approximately 24 hours after confirmation testing is complete which should be no later than Sunday evening, July 19.

Residents located in the affected area are advised to boil all water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and preparing baby formula until the advisory is lifted. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute before use.

Officials say residents should continue to boil their water prior to use until notified by public health officials or the City of Savannah that the system has been fully restored and the water is safe to consume and utilize. At which time, they are advised to flush for at least 5 - 10 minutes or until water runs clear.
