City of Midway announces elevated lead levels in drinking water

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Midway announced on Friday that residents, businesses, and schools needed to be aware of elevated lead levels in collected samples.
They wrote, “Elevated lead levels were identified at some of the locations where samples were collected. These results are specific to the locations sampled and do not mean that every property within the City of Midway water system contains lead.”
The Liberty County School System responded on Saturday that they will be discontinuing the use of school water sources for drinking, encouraging students/staff to bring bottled water from home, and working with the city/appropriate agencies to monitor the situation.
“Your health and safety matter to us,” the city wrote. “We appreciate our citizens for staying informed, asking questions, and helping us look out for one another.”
Liberty Co. schools said both schools will continue normal operations on Monday, and parents/guardians at Liberty Elementary and Midway Middle School were given notice through email.
Information about drinking water and reported lead levels should be directed to the city, not schools.
“The health and safety of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” the school system wrote.
