Chatham fire battalion chief earns prestigious emergency credential

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Chatham County Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Mayers has earned a prestigious emergency management credential held by fewer than 500 professionals.

Mayers received the Associate Emergency Manager designation from the International Association of Emergency Managers on Aug. 20.

The AEM is the organization’s second-highest professional credential. Mayers completed a certification process that included management training, professional references, documented achievements and a written examination.

“Chief Mayers’ achievement reflects the level of professionalism, leadership and commitment we strive for at the Chatham County Fire Department,” Fire Chief James Vickers said.

Vickers added that Mayers’ expertise will strengthen the department’s emergency preparedness and its ability to serve Chatham County.

AEM recipients must complete additional training and demonstrate continued professional contributions every five years to maintain the certification.

The International Association of Emergency Managers represents more than 6,000 emergency management professionals. Its certification program, developed with funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has recognized more than 4,730 emergency managers since 1993.
