Bus carrying Groves HS students runs into ditch on Jimmy DeLoach Parkway

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A school bus carrying about 40 Groves High School students went off the roadway into a ditch Friday morning while school officials say a driver tried to avoid a collision with a Ford F250 truck that had pulled out in front of it.

The district said the incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. on Jimmy Deloach Parkway as the bus traveled southbound. We reached out to the Savannah Police Department who said the incident happened around 6:45 a.m. on Jimmy DeLoach Parkway at Portside Court. Four vehicles were involved, according to SPD.

Bus comes to rest in mud

The district said the bus came to rest in mud on the side of the road and reported students were evacuated safely. Another bus was brought to the scene to take the students to school.

Driver, student examined

The driver and a student reported injury and were examined on scene by EMS, according to school officials. The district said the driver and bus monitor are scheduled for further evaluation at an urgent care facility.

No injury was found in the student at the time of the on-scene examination, but according to the district, the student later began exhibiting concussion-like symptoms and was taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

SCCPSS said the Savannah Police Department is investigating.
