Burton firefighters complete helicopter emergency response training

by Laethon Bumgardner

BEAUFORT, S.C. — Local emergency crews took to the field on Thursday, August 13 to prepare for when every second counts.

Firefighters with Burton Fire District’s Shift Three spent the day training alongside CARE Flight helicopter crews to practice air medical transport operations. The joint training exercise focused on establishing safe landing zones, operating safely around active helicopters and rapidly loading patients for emergency transport.

The air-rescue training comes during a busy period for the fire district. Burton Fire District officials reported responding to more than 2,000 medical emergency calls in 2025.

According to department data, crews are currently on pace to match or exceed that medical call volume in 2026.
