Burton Fire District returns multiple times to brush fire on Angel Lane

BURTON, S.C. (WTOC) - The Burton Fire District continues to return to the area of a half-acre brush fire on Angel Lane in Burton which started on Sunday, May 17.

Initial response

Just past 4 p.m. Sunday, the Burton Fire District went to the brush fire.

Utilizing multiple hose lines, fire crews contained the fire and extinguished active flames. Burton Fire said crews remained on scene for over an hour soaking down the area.

Multiple returns

Burton firefighters went back the following day at 6:45 a.m. when areas within the wood line again began to smolder. Firefighters remained on scene for two hours soaking the area down. Later that day, Burton fire said crews returned to the area to soak down areas which began smoldering once again. Because of the dry conditions and the deep-seated fire, Burton fire officials said they requested South Carolina Forestry to respond to the scene. SC Forestry arrived and, utilizing a tractor, cut a fire break around the area to ensure the smoldering fire would not spread.

Thursday afternoon fire crews went back when a homeowner said the areas within the fire break began to smolder again. While the smoldering areas were contained by the fire break firefighters extinguished the areas of concern.

Fire officials said the fire is believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette.
