Bulloch County student taken into custody following threat to school, district says no active threat

BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - There is no credible threat to Southeast Bulloch High School or Southeast Bulloch Middle School after a student made an alleged verbal threat, Bulloch County Schools announced Friday morning.

Investigation began Wednesday

Southeast Bulloch High School administrators and school resource officers began investigating reports of a student who made an alleged verbal threat against the school on Wednesday. Bulloch County Schools said resource officers then requested assistance from the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement took the student into custody and transported the student to the Bulloch County Jail, according to the school district. The investigation remains active.

An incident report obtained by WTOC from the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office identified the student as a 17-year-old.

The student was arrested Wednesday at Southeast Bulloch High School and charged with terroristic threats and acts, according to the report. The incident report describes officers as responding after being advised of a “suspicious incident” at Southeast Bulloch High School.

The sheriff’s office said the remainder of the report is being withheld in following OCGA 50-18-72(a)(4), a law that exempts records from disclosure under special circumstances.

Additional reports followed

Following the incident, the school district said it continued to receive multiple threat reports through its anonymous reporting system. Users also shared similar claims across social media platforms.

Bulloch County Schools said law enforcement determined there is no credible threat.

Schools operating on normal schedule

Both Southeast Bulloch High School and Southeast Bulloch Middle School are operating on a normal schedule Friday. Out of an abundance of caution, law enforcement officers will maintain an increased presence on campus. Counseling teams are available to support any students who need assistance.

District policy on threats

District policy requires school officials to notify law enforcement immediately in the event of any threat. Under the Bulloch County Schools Code of Conduct, any verbal, written or physical expression of intent to cause harm or violence requires a mandatory report to police, even if no weapon is displayed and no physical attack occurs.
