Bells to ring across downtown Savannah for nation’s 250th anniversary

by Shakuria Smith

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The sound of church bells will echo across downtown Savannah this Independence Day as churches and civic institutions take part in a nationwide tribute marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

At noon on Saturday, July 4, participating locations have been invited by the Savannah 250th Declaration of Independence Commission to ring their bells for 10 minutes, commemorating the moment the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.

One of the participating congregations is Lutheran Church of the Ascension, located at 120 Bull St. on Wright Square. The church’s historic bell system will be part of the citywide observance.

Cantor Tom White, the church’s director of music, will be available for media interviews before and after the bell ringing and can also provide tours of the church’s historic bell configuration.

Community members are encouraged to gather in downtown Savannah at noon to experience the commemorative bell ringing and reflect on the nation’s 250-year history.
