Beaufort County students invited to lead substance misuse prevention efforts

BEAUFORT, Sc. (WTOC) - A youth leadership program is inviting northern Beaufort County students to help prevent substance misuse through conversations with their peers.
Nexus Care of Beaufort County’s STAR Youth Leadership Program, which stands for Striving to Achieve Resiliency, is partnering with All Aboard Beaufort for its October meeting.
The meeting is scheduled for Oct. 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lowcountry Outreach Building, 80 Ladys Island Drive in Beaufort. It is free and open to interested middle and high school students who live north of the Broad River.
The program encourages students to help reduce alcohol and marijuana misuse while developing leadership and communication skills.
Participants can earn volunteer hours toward awards and take part in community scavenger hunts, create media campaigns and give presentations at schools. They will also have opportunities to connect with community leaders and help shape prevention efforts in northern Beaufort County.
All Aboard Beaufort receives funding through a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Drug-Free Communities award to support substance misuse prevention in the area.
