BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - The Board of Voter Registration and Elections of Beaufort County upheld state Rep. William G. Herbkersman’s voter qualifications Thursday following a formal challenge to his residency.

The board held a special hearing after Hilton Head Island resident Calvin “Skip” Hoagland challenged whether Herbkersman, of Bluffton, meets South Carolina’s residency requirements to remain a qualified elector in the county.

Board’s ruling

The board said its decision would be limited to a determination, based on evidence presented and the law, as to whether Herbkersman currently meets or fails to meet the requirements of the S.C. Code to be a qualified elector in Beaufort County.

After reviewing the evidence, the board ruled in Herbkersman’s favor, finding he provided sufficient proof of residence verifying his eligibility to vote in Beaufort County.
