BLUFFTON, S.C. (WTOC) - Beaufort County officials broke ground Tuesday on a $14 million expansion project at the Buckwalter Recreation Complex.

The project will add four multi-use artificial turf fields to the complex, which currently has two fields. The new fields will be available for soccer, flag football, lacrosse, and other activities.

What the project includes

In addition to the new fields, the expansion will bring additional parking, a new restroom facility, and upgrades to the existing restroom facility.

The project is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.

County officials cited the area’s growing population of young families as a driver of the expansion. The complex drew thousands of visitors last year.

“We are thrilled that we are going to be able to expand recreational services in Bluffton,” said Nicole Wood, Beaufort County Deputy County Administrator. “The community just keeps growing and growing and the need has been here, now we can help serve the need. For the families that live here, the visitors that come, the coaches, and tournaments that will be held here it’s going to be incredible and we are so excited.”
