Beaufort Co. School District celebrates record-high S.C. Ready scores; Talk areas in need of improvement

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - The Beaufort County School District (BCSD) is celebrating record-breaking academic progress following the release of the latest S.C. Ready assessment scores.

S.C. Ready assessments are administered annually to students from third through eighth grade, testing proficiency in English-Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science. The state of South Carolina has set a benchmark goal of having 75% of K-12 students testing at or above grade level by the year 2030.

According to district administrators, the latest testing cycle yielded the highest Math and ELA scores in Beaufort County’s history.

Historic Progress in Core Subjects

Since 2021, BCSD has recorded double-digit improvements in both Math and ELA categories. District leaders noted that the math gains are especially critical, as math proficiency has been historically difficult to move statewide since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Both of those are the highest the school district has ever had,” Beaufort County School District Superintendent Dr. Frank Rodriguez said. “Particularly important in Math because that has been the hardest to move since the pandemic. We recognize that there is still room for opportunity and room for growth, but we are excited about what we have seen in that initial phase of data.”

Beyond ELA and Math, the district also tracked significant progress in elementary and middle school science. Over the two school years that science has been integrated into the state assessments, BCSD saw:

A five-point jump among fourth-grade test takers.
A six-point jump among sixth-grade test takers.

Pinpointing areas of need

While celebrating the historic gains, Dr. Rodriguez emphasized that reaching the state’s 75% target by 2030 will require aggressive, tailored intervention. He noted that the district will immediately look beneath the surface-level numbers to customize learning plans.

“When we dissect our data, we go way down into the data at a granular level,” said Dr. Rodriguez. “Find out what the skills in particular are that our students need a little more support in based on that, and so we really attack that at every single grade level, but we really focus in on some of the ones that maybe didn’t score as high this time around.”

Understanding Other Assessments

South Carolina state officials utilize multiple assessments to track progress toward the 2030 goal, including the End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP) and the SC Career Readiness Assessments.

While BCSD showed upward momentum in core S.C. Ready scores, other metrics presented mixed results:

Career Readiness: The district experienced a slight decline in its Career Readiness Assessment scores compared to the 2025 results.
End-of-Course Exams: Beaufort County saw a dip in scores from 2025 to 2026. However, school administrators noted a massive statistical shift: more than 2,000 students took the exam in 2025, compared to just 103 students in 2026.
