WTOC Top Teacher: Michelle Wright Barrett

by Mike Cihla

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Michelle Wright Barrett is a veteran educator who believes deeply in helping her students become the best versions of themselves.

A third-grade teacher at West Chatham Elementary School, Wright Barrett has spent 20 years in the classroom, guided by one core belief: every child has greatness within them.

“I want them to be the best they can be because I know they have it inside of them,” Barrett said. “Sometimes they don’t see it yet, but I set expectations for them. I motivate them. I give them the drive to want to succeed.”

For Wright Barrett, teaching goes beyond academics. She says building strong, meaningful relationships with her students is the foundation of her work.

“I want them to know that Ms. Wright has complete confidence in them,” she said. “They can be whoever they want to be. No matter what negativity someone may place on you, there’s always a positive side to look toward. Mrs. Wright believes in all of you.”

She also works to ensure her classroom is a safe, supportive space—one where students feel seen, valued, and loved.

“And I love my kids,” Wright Barrett said. “They know I love all of them. Sometimes one student will joke that I only love one person, and another student will quickly correct them and say, ‘No—she loves all of us.’ And they know that’s true.”
