WTOC Top Teacher: Kellie Smith

by Mike Cihla

RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (WTOC) - She teaches 5th grade and knows it’s a big responsibility getting her students ready for middle school.

Kellie Smith is a 17-year veteran teacher at George Washington Carver Elementary School.

Smith says she embraces the responsibility that comes with teaching the grade that bridges elementary and middle school.

“Kids know whether you believe in them. They know if you have a passion for their future as much as they do. And hope is everything,” she said.

A lifelong educator at the same school, Smith credits a teacher from her own childhood with helping her feel like she belonged in school — a connection she now aims to make with her students.

“She really took the time to make me feel like I was important, and if you can connect with kids they will do anything for you,” Smith recalled.

Her goals for her students go beyond academics.

“I want them to learn life skills, I want them to learn to love what they do, and to know that they are our future,” she said. Smith stresses that effort and belief in oneself are key: when students put in the work, they can accomplish more than they expect.

As a Top Teacher honoree, Smith is recognized for both the academic preparation she provides and the encouragement she offers her students as they head toward a new chapter in their education.
