Victim of fatal Hampton County shooting identified

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office has identified the person killed in Sunday’s deadly shooting in Gifford as Dequan Marquis Hill.

One person died and two others were injured in the shooting on Laston Street in the Gifford area Sunday morning, January 4, 2026, around 5:00 a.m.

SLED says they were requested by the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office to investigate this incident.

The two people injured in the shooting were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Sheriff Anthony Russell released the following statement:

This incident has deeply impacted our agency and our community. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Hill, as well as those in the Gifford community affected by this tragedy. We ask for continued prayers for the victims, their families, and our community as the investigation continues.
