Varnville Elementary School teacher charged after student left behind on field trip

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - A Varnville Elementary School teacher was charged following an investigation of a child left unattended after a field trip last Friday.

According to the Hampton County Police Department, Amanda Padgett was charged with unlawful conduct towards a child. Police say she turned herself into police and was taken to the Hampton County Detention Center and booked on these charges.

Charges stem from child left unattended after field trip last Friday

A 6-year-old was left unattended at the Palmetto Theater after a school field trip Friday, Mar. 20. After a thorough investigation and interviews with the child, and the child’s guardian(s), the Hampton County School District and all parties involved, police say they determined a teacher from Varnville Elementary school was the field trip sponsor.

According to the police department, “A sponsor is required in order for the trip to be approved and it’s the sponsor’s responsibility to ensure the safety, care and accountability for all persons on the trip.”

WTOC talked to Estill Police Chief Chauncey Solomon Sr. after he rescued the child.

Hampton County School District places teacher on administrative leave following incident

The Hampton County School District confirmed one teacher was placed on administrative leave following the field trip incident last Friday.

The school district said, “Due to our investigation involving personnel, we are limited in the details we can provide.”
